In The Stars

about great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH)

The aim of the ‘In the Stars’ Charity Ball is to raise as much money to help the seriously ill children of Great Ormond Street Hospital as possible. All the proceeds raised will go to this amazing hospital, in the hope that they can change the lives of its ‘little stars’ and their families

A better future for seriously ill children

Every day brings new challenges at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH). Every day, 618 children and young people from across the UK arrive for life-changing treatments.

Every day, young lives hang in the balance as patients, families and staff battle the most complex illnesses. Every day, the brightest minds come together to achieve pioneering medical breakthroughs that change the lives of thousands of children – and change the world.

Despite the greatest challenges a child can face, the hospital is a place where being sick does not always mean being sad. And it’s a place where you’ll find – today and every day – some of the bravest people you could ever meet.

This extraordinary hospital has always depended on charitable support, and every day is a chance for you to make a difference.

how charitable donations are used at GOSH

The charitable donation from events such as the ‘In the Star’ Charity Ball supports the hospital and its patients by funding four key areas:

  • Research

Did you know?: Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity is the largest dedicated funder of children’s medical research in the UK. In 2017-18, over 200 clinical trials took place at the hospital to trial new tests and treatments, involving more than 5,000 participants.

GOSH drives pioneering discoveries out of the labs and onto the wards. But our impact is by no means limited to London. Working alongside our research partners, GOSH Charity support child health research on a national scale – from Aberdeen to Southampton.

  • Life saving Equipment

They fund vital life-saving equipment that allows the clinical and research teams to take advantage of developments in medical science and technology to deliver better care to children.

With your help, they provide the high-tech hardware to ensure children at GOSH have access to the least invasive and most effective treatments available. From live-saving defibrillators to the latest equipment for the rapid diagnosis of genetic conditions, your support enables the GOSH to provide critical tools to help clinicians go above and beyond for the children. The vital updating and modernisation of operating theatres, including the very latest scanning equipment, has only been possible with the assistance of the charitable donation.

  • Rebuilding & refurbishment

With your help, GOSH's redevelopment programme enables the creation of patient-centred spaces, designed to deliver world-class care for some of the UK's most seriously ill children. Your money goes to support the design, construction and fitting of new buildings and the renovation of older areas to give our patients the best care and experience possible.

So, whether it's new inpatient and intensive care beds, state-of-the-art operation theatres or all-important spaces for families to relax or play – your support is critical to the continued transformation of GOSH.

    Support for families & children

With your help, GOSH provides services to ease the burden on families, raise spirits, and support children and young people through life-saving treatment.

The environment can have a profound effect on our mood and overall wellbeing. At GOSH, this is all the more apparent, as children and families have to deal with intense stress and unfamiliar surroundings. They have a range of support projects that help to provide an enhanced patient and family experience, provides support and advice for parents, and their accommodation services keep families together.

There are no words to truly describe the amazing level of love, care and support that GOSH gave Eva and us.

We know they did everything they could for Eva and we are eternally grateful.

You could tell that the nurses truly cared for Eva and were saddened by her passing. Many even attended her funeral to show their love and say their ‘goodbyes.’
